ORIGIN STORY
How it began
Working closely with local charities, First West Foundation contributes to meaningful programs, services and operations to make a positive and lasting impact upon community life.
In the mid-1990s, the credit union Board of Directors established the Foundation to serve as a sustainable, local resource, dedicated to building vibrant and healthy communities through annual grant programs. The decision was made to ensure continued support for community initiatives in years when other funding might not be possible.
Annual investments from the credit union, coupled with donations from the community, have contributed to the Foundation’s assets growing to $21 million from its initial donation of $200,000 in 1996. As part of its community impact, First West Credit Union pays the Foundation’s operating expenses, ensuring 100% of all donations are used for charitable purposes.
Since 1998, over $13 million in grants has been awarded to charities across British Columbia.
The First West Foundation previously operated under the name of Envision Credit Union Charitable Foundation. When Envision Credit Union merged with Valley First Credit Union on January 1, 2010, First West Credit Union was formed, and the foundation changed its name to First West Foundation.
